On March 20, 2025, Academy Canada Webmaster, Jack Barrett, was one of the Celebrity Guest Speakers at the “Canadian Progress Club – Halifax” “Sports Charity Dinner” along with Tessa Bonhomme, Jeremy Roenick, Paul Bissonnette, and Ryan Whitney.

The “Canadian Progress Club Halifax” “Sports Charity Dinner” is an annual fundraising event that raises money for several causes that improves the lives of those with disabilities, including the Kingsmeadow Home, Club Inclusion, and Special Olympics Nova Scotia.

In addition to being one of the Celebrity Guest Speakers, Jack got another unexpected surprise.

He was awarded the 2025 “Canadian Progress Club Halifax – Sports Legacy Award” along with Olympic Gymnast, Elsabeth “Ellie” Black.

The “Sports Legacy Award” is awarded each year a distinguished athlete from Halifax, Nova Scotia who had an amazing athletic careers, represented the Halifax Regional Municipality area at an international level.

According to Jack, he attributes his success as an athlete to his parents, Robert and Jeannee Barrett, who took a big risk at four years of age to defy medical advice of putting him into an institution and decided to raise him on their. He also thanked his Aunt and Grandmother, Kathy and Anna Isnor, for attending almost all his Special Olympics events, and his Brother, Jamie, for getting him to talk.

Their risk sure produced big rewards, including working up from Special Education to Full Academic educational programs at Grade 8, receiving a Grade 12 Academic Diploma from JL Ilsley High School, receiving a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Saint Mary’s University, proudly representing Canada at the Special Olympics World Games four times, invested into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador, and being inducted into three different Sport Hall of Fame’s. Now he can add a Sports Legacy Award to his honours.

He also thanked one of Special Olympics Nova Scotia and Special Olympics Canada’s sponsors, the Canadian Progress Club, and also Academy Canada, for making the Special Olympics dream a reality for him and the 42,000 true heroes across Canada, the Special Olympics athletes themselves.
